当時はかなり心配だったに違いない。
勇者パーティはクヴァールを倒せなかった。また、魔王がどれほど強大な存在であるかも考えていたに違いない。
自分の呪文が基本的に敵に標準化され、防御的に使われたときの「弱点」まで指摘されたことを知ったとき、クヴァールが冷静だったことは称賛に値する。
That must be quite worrying at that time huh. Your party cant defeat a high ranking demon and who knows how many other were like him. They must have also thought how much more powerful the demon king was. Props to Qual from being calm when he discovered his spell basically got standardize by his enemy and even pointed out its “weakness” when used defensively.

We can calculate a rough estimate. Frieren and Fern reached the village 27 years after Himmel’s death. Himmel died 50 years after the last meteor shower, and the meteor shower happened after they returned from killing the demon king, which was a 10 year journey. 27 + 50 + 10 – 80 = 7 If it’s been 80 years since Qual was imprisoned, that means the hero’s party fought him 3 years before killing the demon king.

This was a good balance. You want to the fight against Qual to be anti-climactic to show the passage of time but you don’t want to shortchange the visuals. Here you get just enough of Qual attacking to think it’ll be a fight and then Frieren just obliterates him, showing it wasn’t really much of a fight at all.

Short fights should be kind of expected of Frieren. She’s an endgame mage retracing the tutorial levels. The fights get longer, but stay kind of static in the manga. And all the characters feel kind of emotionless even at their most desperate. It’s like in stead of throwing killing spells at each other, they are playing a game of chess and sipping tea, it kind of makes sense but it also diminishes the direness of the situation(?).

The animation for it is amazing as well, the way it just constructs a frierien out of the flowers right as the chorus hits… Someone got their chance to flex with this ED and i’m really glad they did.

墓のシーンはアニメオリジナルだが、フリーレンとフェルンが村を出る前にその男が死んだことを示唆している可能性があるので、かなり興味深いね。
The grave scene is anime original, though it’s pretty interesting imo since yeah, it could hint that the man died before Frieren and Fern left the village.

クヴァールとの戦いはビジュアル的にすごくクールだったし、サウンドトラックも最高だった。
でも一番重要なのは…脚本がいいってことかな？台詞の織り込み方とか、短いのに効果的な戦い方とか、カメラワークとか、サウンドデザインとか。
The fight with Qual was so fucking cool visually and the soundtrack was awesome. But most importantly… it’s well written? As in how the dialogue is weaved in without overdoing it, how short yet effective the fight was, camera work and sound design.

I always loved how Frieren did world building. It integrates it so naturally rather than the usual exposition dump. It’s fun exploring the world through their adventures! Also… HOLY SHIT. That battle scene is amazing. Can’t believe they did so much with how short it was in the manga. Poor Qual. Bro is old news. Still though, I’m glad they still showed how capable he is by making him adapt really quickly. Showed how much of a threat he is despite him being kicked out of the meta.

漫画の戦闘シーンもかなり良いんだけど、最初の数戦はちょっと硬い感じがしてる。
だから、クヴァール戦のアニメーションは本当に見事だった。
短い戦いだったけど、彼がゾルトラークでフェルンの防御魔法を乱打するシーンは本当に美しかった。
間違いなく『無職転生』の戦闘シーンに匹敵する。
The battle scenes in the manga are pretty decent, but overall I think they are kinda stiff especially in the first few arcs. So its absolutely stunning how they animated Qual. It was a brief fight but him just barraging Soul-track and Fern summoning barriers was just beautiful. Definitely on par with some of the fight scenes in Mushoku Tensei.
